Camping 101

This weekend my boyfriend's family and I spontaneously decided to go camping at
Christopher Run Campgrounds located in Lake Anna, VA.

Needless to say the closest I've been to camping has been a motel 6..

And we did the whole shabang - pitching our own tent, making smores and ho-bo pies,
and lots and lots of wine/lime-a-ritas.

In the end,

The highlight of the weekend was definitely all day Sunday though -
wake boarding, water skiing, boat riding, bridge jumping, and amazing beauty.

A few necessities when camping (coming from a newbie) would definitely be:
  • Bug spray
  • Lantern/flashlights
  • Smores ingredients
  • Blankets/pillows
  • Alcohol
But most importantly... Good company

The Skinny on Working 9-5

So I guess I have entered the "real world" with my first big girl job this summer - full time, desk job, 9-5.
Andddd it's hard!
I no longer can sleep in on summers, go lay out for an hour or so, or work out when ever I want.

Now don't get me wrong, I love working where I work - for Les Mills East Coast headquarters

and the pay checks are pretty nice too ;)

Les Mills is an awesome company that really creates the best experience for group fitness.. training, tips, routines, music, keywords, and on-site customer service help whenever needed. If you haven't tried BODYPUMP you should run to your nearest certified gym ASAP!!!

Anyways, I am sitting for 8 hours everyday and I can see how it has taken a toll on me in such a short time, and how it is so easy to fall into a work, eat, sleep slump all week long.

BUT DON'T!!!

I try little tips every day to keep my body going and feeling healthy/happy/exercised, and you can too.
Hey, every thing helps!

1. Drink up. Suck down water like you are in a desert. Seriously more water means more bathroom breaks which means  more getting up and moving from your desk. The natural cleansing water gives your body doesn't hurt much either.

(This picture just makes you want to chug!!)

I try to drink 1 liter of water before lunch, 1 liter during lunch, and 1 liter after lunch before I leave. At first, I was like helllll no this is way too much h2o, but now I'm finding myself drinking up to 2 liters before lunch like it's nothin.
(my bladder says otherwise)

2. Ditch the chair. If possible, replace your chair with a yoga ball! Luckily, Les Mills is a fitness company which encourages an active lifestyle, so we have exercise equipment every which way.
If that is not the case for you, bring your own in!
And if coworkers would look at you like you had seven eyeballs and a mo-hawk, try simple exercises at your desk throughout the day.

Kegels and core-squeezers are good too!

3. Eat well. Pack your lunch with healthy foods that keep you full and energized for a long time.
My go-to lunch is a spinach salad with chopped onions, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocado slices. My favorite is to top it off with an onion vinaigrette:
packing the dressing in a separate container until I'm ready to feast and shake my salad up.

4. Do a lap. Take time to get outside on a lunch break or during the afternoon to step outside and walk around the block or so. It really does some good - helping to refresh the mind and re-focus.

5. Be happy and make a difference! :)

Beginner Tips for Hot Yoga

MY NEW OBSESSION:

HOT VINYASA YOGA

So I've been doing this whole fitness thing for a while now- sports, running half marathons, spinning, all different types of group exercise, and realized I want to incorporate something new into my fitness routine.. ya know, to keep the body guessing and always improving.

It just so happened that a little yoga studio about two miles from my apartment, Charm City Yoga, was having a summer membership monthly sale for $25.
 Perfect timing right!?
So I hopped on that and got a membership and have been taking as many
hot yoga classes as my schedule (and body) allows.

Hot Yoga is probably the most challenging type of exercise I've ever done.
No lie.
It is not just physically challenging, with all the sweat and slipping,
(definitely recommend bringing a towel to put over your mat
AND an extra hand towel to wipe off with-yes that much sweat)
but mentally challenging as well.

For those that are not familiar with hot vinyasa,
it is a yoga class (usually 90 minutes) conducted in >90 degrees,
getting up to around 110 degrees in some studios
Crazy huh.
And extremely mentally challenging,
thinking that the waves of heat are closing off your airways and
feeling your heart rate skyrocket out of your chest.
It is exhilarating and I'm obsessed with the hot yoga high.

HOT YOGA

On a good note, every class is getting easier and easier and I no longer feel
like a beginner/freaking out I might pass out and die at any minute.

Flying pigeon

I definitely recommend trying hot yoga at least once..
if you are up for a challenge.

Some useful tips for any new beginners:

  • Hydrate A LOT during the day previous to your practice
  • Bring and drink a lot during the session, taking breaks whenever you want - seriously whenever no one will care
  • Hydrate after your practice. Lots and lots of fluids!
  • Bring a yoga towel or beach towel to put over your mat - or else its like doing yoga on a slip-n-slide
  • Put your hair up in a bun and take off all make up - now I wear waterproof mascara that does NOT come of in the shower, but sweats completely off during hot yoga
  • Be open minded!! It doesn't matter if you need to sit down or lay back in child's pose for a minute or two. It is YOUR practice! Have fun with it and be proud of yourself that you are trying new things :)
  • Don't run to the studio - lesson learned 100%

Namaste
